One App, Two Railroads: Keeping Your Layouts Separate

One app, two railroads

If you model more than one railroad — or you're starting a second one from scratch — you no longer need a separate app or a workaround to keep them apart. Track Runner now holds as many layouts as you like, and each one keeps its own equipment, locations, and operating records completely separate.

Each layout keeps to itself

When a layout is active, everything you see belongs to it and nothing else — its locomotives, rolling stock, and inventory, its locations, tracks, and turnouts, and its jobs, sessions, and engineers. Two layouts can share no cars at all, or overlap however you like; the app never mixes them up. The banner at the top and your printed reports always show the name of whichever layout is active, so you're never guessing which railroad you're looking at.

Switching, adding, and renaming

It all lives on the Layout screen in Settings. It lists every layout you've got; tap one to make it active, and the switch is instant — it's really just a filter, so there's no waiting and nothing to confirm. From the same screen you can add a new layout or rename an existing one. Deleting is deliberately careful: a layout has to be empty first. If it still owns records, the app tells you what's left instead of quietly discarding anything, and it won't let you delete the layout you're currently using or your last remaining one.

What stays shared

A few things sensibly stay common across every layout, so you're not re-entering them each time: your lookup lists, your reference manuals, and your to-dos. Those follow you from layout to layout.

Moving equipment between layouts

Sometimes a locomotive or a string of cars needs to move to another layout, and there are two ways to do it. Move Shown to Layout…, in the Manage menu on the roster and inventory lists, moves everything the screen is currently showing in one step — filter down to what you want, then send the batch across. For one-off moves, open a record, tap Edit, and use the Transfer button. Either way, your backups always include every layout, so nothing gets left behind.
